Plate Tectonics

There are many factors at work on the surface of the earth at any one given time and for each of these actions there is a reaction that takes place. Ocean ridges or continental ridges form either on land or underwater, this action takes place when two (2) plates are moving away from each other, as they move apart the mantle rock from the asthenosphere layer flows upward into the void left by the separating plates. At this level the pressure is less and the mantle rock melts to form basalt magma. As the magma flows up it hardens to form a new crust that fills the gap caused by the plates diverging. This magma event is known as spreading center volcanism
