India & Tibet

I recently read an article called the Biggest Crash on Earth: India slides under Tibet, but how? The article talked about the collision between India and the Eurasian Continent  in which the Indian plate was pushed about 500 Kilometers under Tibet. This collision is what produced the Himalayas but they say events such as the earthquakes in 2004 that created the tsunami in the Indian Ocean are all effects of the collision. A more recent example is the Wenchuan earthquake in may 2008 that claimed about 70,000 lives. Scientist that track and monitor the movement of the plates say that the entire Indian sub-continent has moved 2 meters under Tibet in the past 50 years. Scientist hope that by monitoring these plates movement and learning more about the original collision they can decrease the earthquake risk to millions of people in the collision area.
