This earth quake happened in 1989 in California during game three of the world series for San Francisco Giants they were giving a play by play for the game and all the sudden there was an earth quake that occurred and was measured at a 6.9 on the rictor scale. This was pretty impressive but it had a toll of 63 killed and thousands injured due to this earthquake. It only lasted for 15 seconds and caused 7 billion dollars worth of damage to the area.
Now when they look back on this event they say that this earthquake hit int he perfect area because of where the epicenter was caused the least amount of damage and injuries. If the epicenter was a little closer to the city it would have caused much more damage but then there was also Silicone Valley they had to worry about because this had a lot of economical value and if anything happened it would have been very dramatic.
“According to a 2008 study by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), there’s a more than 99% chance that a quake of magnitude 6.7 or higher will hit California over the next 30 years and a nearly 50% chance that a magnitude 7.5 or higher quake will hit the state over the same period.” This statement refers to what Doctor Pillar always says history repeats itself if it happened once it will most likely happen again. But they also believe and it is stated in the article they will not be as lucky next time a major earthquake occurs. They believe that next time that an earthquake occurs in this area it will be much more server and have more consequences to it because the cities are much more populated to when this earth quake occurred last. But they also believe that the technology has improved so much since then that it will help prevent as many deaths as possible.
They said that the biggest prevention of deaths in a earthquake isn’t knowing that it is going to happen but the quality of the construction of the buildings, ever since the 1989 earthquake they have redone the building codes for schools and public buildings but they also redid the construction of bridges such as the bay bridge because part of it was collapsed due to the 1989 earthquake.
This was a very interesting article to read because it applies very much to what we have learned in class and what we continue to learn. Its just crazy to know the possibility that will occur with an earthquake and theirs not much you an do about it but try and safe guard yourself and make strict building codes that could potentially with stand a earthquake.
